The production of rosé wine and its pale pink hue
Rosé wine is characterised in particular by its soft, pale pink colour, which is achieved by removing the skins from the red grapes a few hours after the fermentation process has begun. In this way, the grape skins release less tannin into the must, resulting in that elegant pale pink hue.
An increasingly popular choice of wine
Rosé wine has been growing in popularity for many years and has established its own firm place in the wine world as a versatile and easy-drinking type of wine. The very name ‘rosé wine’ can conjure up images of a warm summer evening on the terrace with an orange sky – and a lovely cold glass of rosé by your side, like a faithful companion. There is something exotic about rosé wine, and this is reflected in the taste, which is often fresh, fruity and sweet.
Dry and sweet rosé wine
It is particularly the fruity flavour that gives rosé wine its exotic character. When talking about rosé wine, it is often various fruit flavours that are used to describe the taste of the rosé in question. Citrus, strawberry, raspberry, cherry, melon and many more can be encountered when exploring the world of rosé wine.
Most people associate rosé wine exclusively with something very sweet (high in sugar) – but it can actually also be quite dry (lower sugar content, often higher alcohol content). Some people believe that rosé wine is made by mixing red wine and white wine – but this is not the case.
How long does rosé wine keep?
Most rosé wines are made to be drunk young and do not have the same ageing potential as some red or white wines. An unopened bottle of rosé wine typically keeps well for 1–2 years after the release date, but this can vary depending on the producer’s style and the quality of the wine.
Once a bottle of rosé wine has been opened, it is best consumed within a few days, as it begins to lose its freshness and aroma after opening. If you want to maximise shelf life and flavour after opening, the wine should be stored with the cork or screw cap in place in the fridge. However, even with correct storage, the quality will gradually decline – though it can, of course, still be drunk after a week or so.
