A brief history of red wine

Red wine has a long history stretching back thousands of years to the earliest civilisations. Archaeological finds suggest that the earliest wine production originated in regions of Georgia and Iran around 6000 BC. Over time, the popularity of wine spread to the Mediterranean region, where the Greeks and, in particular, the Romans perfected the art of winemaking and introduced it to the rest of Europe.

Each grape variety gives the wine its unique flavour, aroma and structure, whilst advances in winemaking techniques and a better understanding of soil and climate conditions have also contributed to the diverse world of red wines we enjoy today. Although winemaking techniques have changed over the years, there is still an underlying principle that forms the basis of wine production: grape juice is transformed into wine through a fermentation process.

Most popular type of wine

Both in Denmark and globally, red wine is the most popular type of wine – in other words, it outsells both white wine and rosé wine. The most commonly used grapes for red wine are blue grapes, and include, amongst others, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Tempranillo. However, red wine is not made exclusively from blue grapes – some red wines can also be a blend of both blue and green grapes.

How long does red wine keep?

Generally speaking, red wine ages better than white wine. An opened bottle of red wine will typically be at its best within 3–5 days if stored with the cork in place and in the fridge. It is always a good idea to keep the bottle away from heat and sunlight – and to store it horizontally so that the cork stays moist, thereby preventing air from entering the bottle. Remember that not all red wines are made for ageing. Many modern red wines are designed to be enjoyed whilst they are still young and fresh.

Red wine and food

Red wine can be enjoyed on its own, but it is when paired with food that it really comes into its own. Traditionally, red wine is served with various types of meat dishes. Certain grapes pair well with specific types of meat – for example, a good Cabernet Sauvignon with a steak and a Sangiovese with a pizza or pasta dish.
